Montréal, April 30 2024 – Jean-Simon Desgagnés returns to La Classique d'athlétisme de Montréal in a strong 1500 metres field on June 21, looking to raise his personal best to a new level.

The Québec record holder in the 3000 meters steeplechase, eighth at the World Athletics Budapest 2023 championships, will use the shorter distance to complete his Olympic Trials preparation.

As he did in the 2023 edition, which he won with a personal best of 3 min 38.50 sec, Jean-Simon will start the Elite 1500 meters of the Classic. We haven't forgotten how the steeplechase specialist concluded the race with a very strong last lap to beat all the favorites and pave the way for a fantastic performance at the world championships in Budapest a few weeks later. The med school student from Laval University will conclude his preparation for the Olympic Trials in Montreal after participating in the 3000m steeplechase at the Diamond League in Stockholm on June 2.

The Montréal 1500 meter field promises to be one of the toughest.

Desgagnés will have to be at his best, racing with Robert Heppenstall, the silver medalist of the 2023 Pan American Games. Already clocked in 3:35.17, Heppenstall is looking for an Olympic qualification over the distance. Cameron Proceviat, a member of the Canadian team at the 2022 Worlds in Eugene, will also look to collect important points in the race for Olympic qualification.

Several other competitors will come and push our Canadians to the limit and who knows maybe towards other Olympic qualification standards.
