Montréal, April 23 2024 - Great news for Montréal and Québec track & field fans! Canada's new sprint queen Audrey Leduc has confirmed she will be in the starting blocks for the 100 metres sprint at La Classique d'athlétisme de Montréal next June 21.
The new canadian sprint sensation smashed her personal best and the Canadian record with an outstanding 10.96 performance Saturday April 20 at the LSU Alumni Gold meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, erasing the previous mark of 10.98 held by Angela Bailey since July 1987.
Since her first participation at La Classique in 2019, Leduc has never missed the opportunity of racing in Montréal, contributing to the success of the local high performance meet.
After her fantastic performance in Louisiana, the 25 year old Gatineau native has now achieved the 11.07 automatic qualifying needed result for her olympic selection by a wide margin.
In 2023, the 100 metres final at La Classique was dominated in 11.46 sec by Khamica Bingham from Brampton, Ontario. Leduc will look for a win this year after her 3rd place last year and will aim to improve the meet record of 11.11 achieved by Crystal Emmanuel in 2021.
The new challenge for the Montréal organizers will be finding the highest possible level of competitors to challenge the new canadian sprint boss. Other prominent sprinters are expected at La Classique for the last opportunity to achieve olympic standards before the Canadian Olympic Trials beginning on June 27.
